Mod Note: Commissions?
Recently my computer stopped working, it won't load past the Welcome screen. Right now, we're so strapped for money that the idea of a new computer is laughable. But I could probably get a refurbished one for $150-$170 online. Here lies my idea. I was thinking of doing commissions; fics and graphics for pay. I don't have any set prices or anything yet, but I was just wondering what you guys thought of the idea? This could really help me, as I'm using my brother's computer, which is the communal laptop and it runs so slow I want to cry. I'm really not expecting anyone to say "Oh yes, let me give you money for your stories/art!!" but I guess we shall see. If I get some positive feedback, I'll set up a commissons page, both on this comm and my personal Livejournal. Thanks for your time!

This idea has been put off thanks to my father sending a laptop my way. Thanks so much for the comments and ideas though ♥!

Well, personally I can't afford anything right now but I think if you get the price right maybe people would pay? I'm not super active on lj but depending on how much stuff is out there for free, you might have something. My suggestion/question is, do you do layouts? I think there are a lot of free designs these days(???) but I bet people might pay for that. I have my original layout from when I joined lj in 2003 [someone made for me] and I'm so used to/comforted by my old lurid bubble gum pink Elijah layout (hey, it was 2003) I wouldn't change it (people have offered lol I guess it's pretty bad) but I remember I couldn't make my own layout at the time and signed up on some list some graphic maker had (like a "free layouts to the first 20 people who comment on this post" or something) and that's how I got one at all. Or mood themes, because those take a lot of patience and time to make and I bet people would like a custom one with their fandom, if it's not freely available.

You have to see how much is available on lj or other journals though; I am really busy these days so don't even hang out in communities or anything at all, and only have a small flist. I remember in 2003 lj was bare bones but it's probably changed.

Sorry for rambling. I hope I made sense.

Also, my heartfelt sympathies for your computer. Part of my laptop keyboard is smashed due to a lamp falling on it in an earthquake (I live in California) but I can't even get it fixed. As long as the letter keys work I figure it's okay. Also, did you consider just getting a new hard drive for it? I had my old laptop 8 years and was on my second hard drive and third power cord. I don't know about computers or what you have but getting a new hard drive was WAY cheaper than getting an entire new computer ♥

No, you'r ramblings make perfect sense! Thank you for your comment :)

And I think that you may be right about the hard drive. The laptop that I have is old, like 11 or 12 years, but maybe a new hard drive could do the trick.

While I'm unable to make layouts ( i really wish I could) I can do mood themes and other graphics. I'll just have to see how it goes, if there's more interest. Thanks so much again :D

Also, if you look at hard drives don't go to big box stores like Best Buy because they will rip you off (I went through a lot of stuff with my poor ol' laptop). If you go to an independent dealer they might be able to give you a deal (maybe shop around?). I mean, even if you get a hard drive with very little space at least your computer might work while you save up to eventually get a decent computer, you know?

Good luck with the graphics!! See what's out there and then try to fill the gaps. Oh, also put together a "portfolio" kind of page/post so people can check out your work. Like, put on an assortment of icons demonstrating different techniques and styles, and maybe a couple examples of other work you do. And are people still able to have graphics on the top of their friends page? I have the old style. I actually only see my lurid pink journal when I go to my journal; my friends list is plain but somehow I (or someone did it for me lol; it was 11 years ago) got a graphic on the top of my flist. It's just the size of a friends only graphic. But maybe you could do header graphics and friends only graphics and such.

Thank you so much for all of your advice! ♥ I'm going to be putting the commission idea off because apparently all I had to do was mention my computer woes to my father. He's going to loan me one of his laptops until tax time when I'll be able to buy myself what I need. Thankfully it's a newer model and he's never had a problem with it, so my problems are solved for now!

Yes right now I'm using an HP with a crack version of Windows 8 and running it off of power cord but at least it's something to do Photoshop on. I do all of my writing in Google Docs but it all works for me for now :))))
